Punjabi University gets new DPR; APRO raises question

Vice chancellor Punjabi university Patiala has given the additional charge of director public relations (DPR) to Daljit Ami director (Educational Multimedia Research Centre EMRC), Punjabi university.

Earlier Dr Happy Jeji holds the additional charge of DPR Punjabi University. She is a head of the department of journalism and mass communication, Punjabi University.

Daljit Ami is a Punjabi documentary filmmaker and journalist. He has a master’s degree in Ancient Indian History, Archaeology and Culture, and a Masters in Mass Communications. He has worked on a number of independent films and has created documentaries dealing with social issues and politics of northern India. In the past, he has worked as an assistant editor for the newspaper Punjabi Tribune, and has worked as editorial consultant for Day & Night News and Global Punjab TV, a Punjabi channel broadcast in the US and Canada. He also volunteers for Panjab Digital Library as Director, Communications.

Meanwhile, assistant public relations officer (APRO) of the university Harminder Singh Khokhar has raised questions on the additional charge of DPR given to Daljit Ami.

Khokhar has written a letter to the vice chancellor and requested him to reconsider his decision and appoint him the DPRO of the university, as he is serving the university since 2001.He has all the required qualifications, experience.  He claimed that he is more qualified and more experienced than Daljit Ami.

The university has no regular post of director public relations and is giving the additional charge of director public relations to HoD Journalism or director EMRC since around 2000.

In 1997 when Parkash Singh Badal became the chief minister of Punjab, one of close confidant of Gurcharan Singh Tohra, Malwinder Singh Malhi was made DPRO of Punjabi University Patiala. After the feud between Badal and Tohra in late nineties, Malwinder Singh Malhi was removed as DPRO. The university authorities upgraded the post from DPRO to Director and decided to give the additional charge of director public relations to a Professor / HoD of the university.
