Punjabi University Patiala takes a step forward to promote Indian sign language

Punjabi University Patiala moves ahead with another innovative step to support and promote the agenda of United Nations (UN) by facilitating the learning of Indian sign language.

University Vice-chancellor Professor Arvind launched a tool that converts the University dhuni into Indian sign language. It is developed by an assistant professor Dr. Williamjeet Singh, Amandeep Singh of Computer science and engineering department of the varsity with the help of Ravinder as a sign language teacher. Prof. Arvind highly appreciated the work done by the team and guided to develop with more such information translation and delivery systems.

Dr. Williamjeet Singh said the tool is the first ever work done to convert the content associated with varsity into Indian sign language with an aim to recognize the importance of preserving sign language as a part of linguistic and cultural diversity. The varsity dhuni is an integral part of Gurbani and a creation of first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Every event of the varsity begins with this dhuni to remember and thank the almighty. “Videya vichari taan parupkari” is the central idea of this dhuni.

“The tool is one of its kind to create such an innovative content in Indian sign language that provides a thrust to make our societies more inclusive and accessible. This product  will be made available to everyone through the use of internet” he said and added that the tool would benefit the people to understand and learn such spiritual work in Indian sign language in an effective way.

The team lead by Dr. Williamjeet Singh is already working in the same area to provide the content in Indian sign language in a creative way using different web based solutions. They have already build mobile apps for the promotion of Indian sign language.

Dr. Raman Maini, Head department of CSE appreciated the whole work and motivated the whole team for creating more such web based solutions in the future also.
