Punjabi University staff told to check stubble fires

The sub divisional magistrate (SDM), Patiala has deputed Punjabi University staff to ensure that farmers do not burn paddy straw. The staff has been asked to report their cluster officer and ensure their presence at the villages allotted to them.

The university authorities has instructed the department heads on November 18, 2024 to ensure that the concerned employees must report on time.

SDM Patiala has passed these orders on behalf of deputy commissioner, Patiala. The staff is instructed to inform the famers that “they should manage paddy straw in fields as there are a number of techniques available under which the mechanised management of paddy stubble could be done . They must educate farmers not to set paddy straw on fire, which further harm soil fertility, eco-friendly system and human health.”

Punjab recorded its highest single-day count of stubble-burning incidents this season, with 1,251 farm fires reported on Monday (November 18,2024).
