Punjabi university student Army Chief motivated young officers, students to take up active leadership roles

Department of Defence and Strategic Studies, Punjabi University, Patiala organized a national seminar to commemorate 50 years of 1971 Indo-Pak war. The year 2021 is celebrated as Swarnim Vijay Varsh and as the part of commemoration. The Chief of Army Staff, General M. M. Naravane was welcomed by Prof. Arvind Vice Chancellor and Dr. Umrao Singh Head of Department in the Punjabi university Patiala campus.
Lt. Gen. H.S. Panag lauded the sacrifice of Indian armed forces who laid down their lives in the 1971 Indo Pak war which also saw the liberation of Bangladesh. He stated that the country is indebted to all the martyrs. He motivated young officers and students through his experience of 1971 war. He asked students to further contribute by taking up academic research for better evaluation of the 1971 war.
Another key speaker, Lt. Gen. JS Cheema gave a detailed account of the strategic and tactical developments along the eastern theatre during the course of war and critically examined the Shimla Agreement that took place in the aftermath of the war.
Another key speaker, Lt.Gen. BS Grewal, discussed with students the major on ground developments that took along the western border as well as the naval and air operations undertaken by Indian forces to neutralize the Pakistani offence. He gave first hand information about the incidents that took place along the Poonch and Chamb areas of J & K and discussed the strategic significance of the Shakargarh buldge and how India managed to tackle the area diligently.
The Chief Guest of the seminar, General M. M. Naravane, chief of army staff who is doing his PhD under Dr. Umrao Singh Head of Department of Defence and Strategic Studies in the Punjabi university laid emphasis on the changed course of warfare brought about by the developments made in the field of strategy, structure and defence technology. He motivated young officers and students to take up active leadership roles while being innovative in their approach and asked to students adopt an adaptive and versatile outlook to achieve cognitive dominance. He emphasized that ‘either transform or parish’.
