Punjabi university syndicate meeting on August 17; all eyes on its outcome

After much hue and cry raised by teaching, non teaching faculty and others , for not holding the syndicate meeting, for almost a year, Punjabi university authorities has finally going to hold a virtual syndicate meeting on Monday –August,17,2020.
This syndicate meeting is fixed, after the Punjab govt higher education department had given the directions in June this year to hold the meeting.
As per the programme, the university will hold a virtual meeting-first of its kind, due to the ongoing corona pandemic. Punjabi university vice chancellor Prof BS Ghuman will chair the syndicate meeting. Punjabi university had 18 members in its syndicate including the vice chancellor, deans, DPI colleges, secy higher education, director Punjab language department, three principals of government colleges affiliated with Punjabi university, three Punjab government nominated members.
This syndicate meeting is going to be an important, as the reports of enquiry commission is expected to be opened or tabled before the syndicate members and the members may look into the enquiry reports, which was ordered by the officiating VC, the then secretary of higher education, Anurag Verma, in March 2017, after Dr jaspal Singh resigned from the post of VC. During his short tenure Verma had received complaints regarding alleged irregularities in the university’s functioning from 2007 to 2017, when Dr Jaspal Singh was the vice chancellor. On the basis of these complaints, Verma had ordered 14 internal inquiries in April, 2017. The sealed reports of these were handed over to Punjabi University V-C Prof BS Ghuman , later on 2017.
Another main point , that will be discussed, will be the dwindling financial condition of the university.
The syndicate will also take decisions regarding the academic programe, the extension in the services of teaching faculty, all pending approvals related to the teaching faculty, board of studies panel expert committees, etc.
Some of Punjabi university teaching faculty members has plans to contest the upcoming 2022 assembly elections. Their application to contest the election will be placed before the syndicate members, to get their approval.
The university authorities might put up the case for approval of “Punjab govt withdrawing the pre-audit team and take appropriate decision after the situation arising, after this decision.’
