Punjabi University terminates “instructors” contract working as teaching faculty

Registrar, Punjabi University, Patiala Dr Navjot Kaur has issued a termination order of teaching faculty working as “Instructors” in various departments.
As per the orders, “the university has recruited the “instructors” purely on temporary basis as no suitable candidates as per UGC guidelines were found in past. Their terms were extended without finding the suitable candidates for the posts. Now, the university authorities has decided to not to extend their tenure from November 15,2022 onwards. If any workload on teaching faculty is felt, it will be divided amongst the guest faculty. If needed, university may hire the guest faculty, as per UGC guidelines.”
As per sources, total 22 Instructors were removed by the university authorities. These instructors are working in universities neighborhood campuses and university constituent colleges .
A week ago, the instructors had staged a protest outside the vice chancellor’s office, demanding the regularization of their services. They even met and handed over their demands to the visiting Punjab ministers in the campus.

On this matter a senior functionary of the university on the condition of anonymity said, “in last few days, various ministers of Punjab government had visited Punjabi University campus to attend various functions. The university authorities have discussed various issues with them. This issue of back door entry of “instructors” was also discussed. The government gave clear instructions to the university authorities to not to compromise with students future and now university is just endorsing the government decision and decided to not to extend their term from today itself.”
As per available information, the process to hire contractual workers was started in 2013 to act against vacant posts of assistant professors at the Punjabi University constituent colleges for one year, as their contract was valid upto 2014. but, their contracts was then extended every year.
