Punjab’s pride IIT Ropar listed in top Times Higher Education (THE) Asia university rankings 2020

IIT Ropar  made a debut this year in Times Higher Education THE ASIA University Rankings 2020, being ranked 47th   and entering the top 50 list for the first time. In spite of being a young Institution, IIT Ropar has punched well above its weight from the more popular predecessors. This year, in February the Institute has also made a reputable debut in THE Emerging Economies University Rankings 2020, being ranked 63rd sharing the rank with IIT Madras and entering the top 100 list for the first time.

Having started the journey in 2008 with 500 acres of grassland on the banks of river Satluj in the city Rupnagar of Punjab, IIT Ropar has made impressive and rapid strides towards creating a remarkable and unique campus in this challenging yet serene ambience.

With a state-of-the-art infrastructure on a built-up area of 2.5 million sq.feet  comprising of housing for 2100 students, 180 faculty and 114 staff members, magnificent entrance, cutting-edge laboratories, libraries, sports facilities, spaces for other extra and co-curricular activities and the unique design of the hostels with large common spaces, the institute has come alive.

A number of nationally relevant research projects, e.g., in sectors of defense, Water and Environment, energy; healthcare, infrastructure, etc are going on in the campus. There are a large number of projects undertaken by IIT Ropar which contribute to the national development goals and priorities. Some representative activities in these areas are briefly mentioned below:

  • Doffing Unit (Station) For Healthcare Workers and Negative Pressure Rooms to prevent the transmission of COVID-19.
  • A sanitizing device based on UV-C germicidal irradiation technology to sterilize groceries, vegetables, packages and personal belongings.
  • 3-way PPE Sterilization Unit
  • Robotics to deliver medicines/food in Covid19 patients ward to minimize medical staff intervention.
  • Containment Box for protecting frontline healthcare workers.
  • Intelligent Infrared Vision System for Covid-19 suspects’ identification.
  • Stubble Management Solution- Converting stubble into the acoustic board, Stubble removal machine
  • Device to monitor vehicle pollution in real-time
  • Coating resistant to Erosion and Corrosion
  • Detecting Group Level Emotions
  • Intoxicated State Detection
  • Detecting Type 2 Diabetes from fingernails
  • Lotus inspired biodegradable water repellant material developed
  • Thermal Imaging techniques for Cancer Detection
  • Vaccination against drug addiction

The rankings are based on 13 performance indicators and are judged across all their core missions – teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook – to provide the most comprehensive and balanced comparisons available. The 2020 ranking includes just under 500 universities from 30 territories.
