Punjab’s small town local bodies perform fairly well in Zonal Swachh Survekshan Awards 2023; state overall ranked 7th

The President of India, Droupadi Murmu conferred Swachh Survekshan awards 2023 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi hosted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA).
13 awardees received felicitations under categories of Clean Cities, Cleanest Cantonment, SafaiMitra Suraksha, Ganga Towns and Best Performing State were given away. This year the cleanest city award showcased joint winners. Port city Surat bagged the top honours, alongside Indore, who had conquered the top spot alone for 6 consecutive years.
In the category of cities with a population of less than 1 lakh, Sasvad, Patan and Lonavala secured the top three spots.
Mhow Cantonment Board in Madhya Pradesh was adjudged the Cleanest Cantonment Board.
Varanasi and Prayagraj won the top two awards amongst the Cleanest Ganga Towns.
Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh won the top three awards for Best Performing State.
Chandigarh walked away with the award for the Best Safaimitra Surakshit Sheher.
110 awards were bestowed during the ceremony including 24 National, 20 Zonal and 54 State level awards.
Swachh Survekshan Awards 2023 are categorized under 10 categories- Cities with more than 1L population, less than 1 L population is judged under National performance. In Zonal performance cities are divided into four categories-cities with less than 15000, cities with 15000-25000, cities with 25000-50,000 and cities with 50,000-1 lakh population.
Than cantonment boards, Ganga town and states ranking is also done.
In today’s result, Punjab bagged 7th position out of 27 states. It’s neighboring states Haryana got 14th , Himachal got 18th, Rajasthan got 25th position

In North India zone, out of top 20 cities with less than 15000 populations Punjab’s 10 local bodies, nagar panchayat’s bagged the positions.

In cantonment, board category Amritsar cantonment got 10th position Jalandhar Cantonment got 14th position and Ferozepur cantonment got 32nd position out of 61 cantonment boards
Punjab has 163 urban local bodies (ULBs).
Overall Punjab won 2 awards. 25 cities got ODF, 77 got ODF =, 51 got ODF++ status.13 cities got Water + status.
Under door to door garbage collection, Punjab has registered 80.09 percent area. Punjab lacks in source segregation as it covers 54.35 percent and only 27.15 percent is processed.
In today’s ranking Amritsar got 6th rank in state and 142 at national level. Similarly other district headquarters like Barnala got 12 and 233, Bathinda got 4 and 121, Faridkot got 78 and 1369, Fazilka got 4 and 491, Faerozepur got 5 and 127, Gurdaspur got 91 and 3244, Hoshiarpur got 8 and 158 , Patiala got 3 and 120, Ropar got 92 and 1585, Mohali got 1st and 82, Sangrur got 180 and 1673, Fatehgarh Sahib got 102 and 1726, Tarn Taran got 80 and 1385, Jalandhar got 13 and 239, Kapurthala got 30 and 1135, Ludhiana got 10 and 207,Mansa got 23 and 1067, Moga got 14 and 246, Muktsar Sahib got 9 and 170, Patahnkot got 11 and 208, Nawashahr got 11 and 735 at state and national level respectively.
