PUTA President Prof. Deol calls for Punjabi University, Patiala to be made debt-free

The newly elected President of the Punjabi University Teachers’ Association (PUTA), Professor Nishan Singh Deol, in his first statement to the press, urged the Punjab Government to waive off the university’s debt of approximately Rs 150 crore.
He stated that Punjabi University, Patiala has consistently been providing quality higher education to students from rural and economically weaker sections.
In addition, the university has been continuously working towards the promotion and propagation of the Punjabi language and culture. To ensure that the university can continue to provide quality education to underprivileged students, it is essential that it be made debt-free.
Dr. Deol further said that the Chief Minister of Punjab, Bhagwant Singh Mann, had expressed concern over the university’s debt during his first visit and had promised to make Punjabi University debt-free.
Professor Deol expressed confidence that the Chief Minister will soon take necessary steps to fulfill this promise.

On this occasion, the newly elected Secretary of PUTA, Dr. Avneetpal Singh, stated that the new team will prioritize the issue of payment of pending dues related to teachers’ promotions, revised pay scales, and other allowances. He further emphasized that promotion cases of university teachers must be considered strictly in accordance with UGC guidelines of 2010, 2016, or 2018.
PUTA will strongly oppose any attempt by the university administration to process these cases outside the prescribed UGC norms.
Newly elected members of the PUTA executive, including Dr. Charanjit Nohra, Prof. Jagtar Singh, Prof. Rakesh Kumar, Dr. Gaurav Gupta, and others, also reiterated their commitment to firmly fight for the rights and demands of teachers of Punjabi University.
