Railways engineer nabbed by vigilance bureau for taking Rs 15,000 bribe

The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) during its ongoing crusade against corruption in the state, has nabbed Varun Dev Prasad, posted as Senior Section Engineer (Works), Indian Railways at Batala, Gurdaspur district while accepting a bribe of Rs 15,000.

Disclosing this here today a spokesperson of the state VB informed that said railways officer has been arrested on a complaint lodged by Nirmal Singh, owner of M/s Sokhi Contractors and Engineers, Partap Avenue, Amritsar.

He further added that the complainant has approached the VB and informed that he has a tender with Indian Railways to complete civil works at Batala-Kadian railway line. He further alleged that the said railways engineer has been demanding Rs 50,000 to clear his bills amounting to Rs 4,60,000 for the said works but the deal has been struck at Rs 15,000.

The spokesperson further informed that following a preliminary inquiry in this regard, the VB team laid a trap, resulting in the red-handed arrest of above said railways section engineer while demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 15,000 from the complainant in the presence of two official witnesses.

In this regard, a case under Prevention of Corruption Act, has been registered at police station VB range Amritsar against the said official. The apprehended accused would be presented before the competent court and further investigation into the case was under progress.
