For the past 24 hours, about 85,000 cusecs of water was being released from Bhakra Dam. The good news now is that the release has been reduced to 70,000 cusecs. This reduction will bring relief to those villages where water had entered fields and had even reached close to residential areas.

Sharing this information during his visit to flood-affected villages of Nangal, Deputy Commissioner of Rupnagar, Varjeet Walia, said that due to the additional release of water from Bhakra Dam and heavy rainfall in the catchment areas of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and BBMB, around 15 villages in Nangal sub-division and 5–6 villages in Sri Anandpur Sahib had been affected. Rescue teams are active in all affected villages, with quick response teams and NDRF units deployed. Wherever required, immediate assistance is being provided.

The Deputy Commissioner informed that road connectivity to 2–3 villages in Nangal is currently disrupted, where rescue operations are being carried out using boats and NDRF teams. Access to other villages is being maintained through tractor-trolleys, while medical teams, veterinary doctors, ration, animal fodder, and other essential supplies are being delivered.

He added that five relief centers are functional in Nangal and two in Sri Anandpur Sahib, providing 24-hour medical care, ambulances, food, and drinking water. Residents of low-lying areas are being continuously urged to shift to these relief camps, as the risk of water accumulation remains. The top priority of the administration is to ensure the safety of every individual, livestock, and property.

The Deputy Commissioner further stated that doctors and veterinary doctors are stationed at each relief camp, and all necessary arrangements are in place. Medical teams are now being sent to villages where water levels are receding, to provide health check-ups and medicines. He also inspected the Agampur bridge and expressed satisfaction over the relief measures in Sri Anandpur Sahib, highlighting that effective coordination with panchayats, sarpanches, village leaders, and religious and social organizations has been highly effective.

He said that updates on dam water release and weather forecasts are being delivered to people living in remote rural areas via social media, enabling them to prepare their households in advance. He appealed to people not to believe in rumors, assuring them that the administration is always available to help.

SSP Rupnagar, Gulneet Singh Khurana, added that public safety is the top priority and that police personnel, NDRF teams, and other security staff deployed have been performing their duties with full dedication and commitment.

On this occasion, Additional Deputy Commissioner Chandarjyoti Singh, SDM Nangal Sachin Pathak, SDM Sri Anandpur Sahib Jaspreet Singh, DSP Nangal Kulveer Singh, DSP Sri Anandpur Sahib Ajay Singh, along with officials from various departments, were present.
