Resentment is brewing among  residents of Rupnagar against the reported move of the Punjab government to accord district status to Sri Anandpur Sahib.

It may be mentioned that there is reportedly a move to carve out new district of Anandpur Sahib out of the existing Rupnagar district to mark the 350th martyrdom day of ninth sikh Guru Tegh Bahadur ji.

The move has not gone down well with the residents of Rupnagar.

The District Bar Association Rupnagar is already up against arms against the move. The Bar Association had  observed ‘no work’ on Friday over the issue.

Bar Association president Advocate Harpreet Singh Kang has strongly opposed the govt’s move saying that there is no logic behind carving out a new district by further reducing the size of Rupnagar district, which has already become small after formation of Mohali district in 2006.

He said that there should be a proper policy for reorganization of districts as there were many district which were big in size and there are many smaller districts.

Kang said that an emergency meeting of the District Bar Association, Rupnagar had been convened on Monday to decide about the course of action over the government’s move.

Noted social activist Dr.RS Parmar, who had spearhead an agitation at the time of formation of  Mohali district, has also opposed the government’s move to accord district status to Sri Anandpur Sahib.

He said that there was no logic behind  formation of new districts without proper infrastructure. Moreover, formation of new district would put financial burden on the state government.

He said that Since Sri Anandpur Sahib is a historic town, the government must pay attention towards its overall development ,which would be a great tribute to Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur ji on his 350th martyrdom day.
