Rupnagar Police Foil Major Conspiracy of Target Killing and Robbery; 5 Accused held
Bahadurjeet Singh/ royalpatiala.in News/ Rupnagar,January 5,2026 Rupnagar district Police achieved a major success when they timely foiled a conspiracy involving target killing and robbery and arrested five accused persons.
Sharing details, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gulneet Singh Khurana said that an encounter took place between the police and the accused in village Rolumajra, under Police Station Sri Chamkaur Sahib. During the encounter, one accused was injured by a bullet, and illegal weapons were also recovered from the spot.
SSP said that the police had received tip off that some individuals, armed with weapons, had gathered with the intention of committing robbery and murdering Ranjit Singh, a resident of village Rolu Majra, Police Station Sri Chamkaur Sahib, District Rupnagar, who is currently settled in Italy. Acting on this input, joint teams were formed under the leadership of SP (Detective) Gurdeep Singh Gosal, including DSP Gabbar Singh, DSP Jatinder Chauhan, CIA Incharge Rupnagar Inspector Rahul Sharma, and Special Branch Incharge Rupnagar Inspector Gurvinder Singh, and were dispatched to the spot.
He further stated that when the police team surrounded the accused and asked them to surrender, the accused opened fire at the police. In the retaliatory action by the police, during the cross-firing, accused Karanveer Singh alias Kanwa sustained a bullet injury in his leg. The injured accused was admitted to the Civil Hospital for treatment.
SSP Gulneet Singh Khurana informed that initially a case was registered against the accused under Sections 399 and 402 of the IPC. However, as the investigation progressed, sections related to attempt to murder were also added. During interrogation, it came to light that the conspiracy was linked to target killing, with connections leading to a network associated with pro-Khalistan activities. Based on these findings, sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) were also invoked in the case.

He said that investigations revealed that Italy-based Ranjit Singh, who had recently come to his native village, is associated with the management committee of Gurdwara Kalgidhar Sahib and had opposed certain extremist activities, due to which he was targeted. It was also revealed that the murder contract was given by accused sitting abroad through their contacts residing in Greece and Dubai.
The police recovered three .32 bore pistols, one .315 bore country-made weapon, live cartridges, and magazines from the possession of the accused. All the weapons were illegal. As per police records, Karanveer Singh alias Kanwa was previously wanted in two murder cases and incidents of firing. Apart from Karanveer Singh, the arrested accused include Akash Rana, Vansh Shori, Gurkamal Singh alias Kamal, and Karandeep Singh alias Kanu.
The SSP added that the police are conducting an in-depth investigation into the identification of accused persons based abroad, the arms supply chain, and the entire network. Ranjit Singh has currently returned to Italy. The police have claimed that more major revelations may emerge during the course of the investigation.
