The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today demanded immediate registration of a case and arrest of education minister Harjot Bains for allegedly abetting the suicide of a teacher – Balwinder Kaur, even as it accused the Rupnagar police of trying to save the minister by indulging in a one sided probe against the in-laws of the teacher despite the fact that the latter had specifically held the minister responsible for her death.

A SAD delegation led by Bikram Singh Majithia and including Daljit Singh Cheema, Sarabjit Singh Jhinjher and

Arshdeep Singh Kler visited the residence of the victim at Bassi village and interacted with the bereaved family. The SAD delegation also visited the ‘dharna’ site of the 1158 Assistant Professor and Librarian Front, near  the residence of Harjot Bains at Gambhirpur village, of which the victim was also a member. It also visited the hospital where Balwinder’sbody was taken post recovery.

Talking to newsmen after interacting with the bereaved family, Bikram Majithia said “it is heart rendering to read the suicide note of the victim.

She has detailed how she had suffered two miscarriages and was in depression due to the manner in which she was shunted out of her job despite having received an appointment letter for the post of an Assistant Professor”. Majithia said the teacher had made it clear in her suicide note that the education minister alone was responsible for her suicide and that no one else, including her in-laws, should be held responsible for the same.

Majithia said despite this written document, the Rupnagar police registered a case against the teacher’s in-laws even as no action was initiated against the minister. Holding SSP Vivek Sheel Soni directly responsible for allegedly shielding the minister, Majithia said “earlier also the SSP has received a rap from the high court for not taking action against the kingpins behind illegal mining in this district”.

Asserting that as per the Indian Penal Code it was incumbent on the Rupnagar  police to register a case against Bains on the basis of the suicide note of the victim, Majithia said “the police are duty bound to probe the dying declaration of the teacher”. The leader also gave the example of the Inderjit Singh Chadha suicide case in which seven out of eight persons named in the suicide note had been arrested and now the way had been cleared by the high court for taking action against former DGP S Chattopadhya also. He also asserted the police was not doing enough to recover the body of the teacher in the same way it had neglected its duties in the Dhillon brothers’ double suicide case.

Later, addressing 1158 Assistant Professors and Librarian Front members both Majithia and Dr Daljit Cheema highlighted how Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Spokesman Malwinder Kang had prejudged police investigation in the case by asserting that the teacher had committed suicide due to the harassment she faced at the hands of her husband. “Kang also accused the opposition of being part of the Vulture Kingdom for raising the voice of the victim but deleted his comments later. This shows how serious the AAP government is about providing justice to the ‘amritdhari’ teacher who gave up her life in desperation due to Harjot Bains”, the leaders added.

They also appreciated the courage of the highly educated teachers who are agitating for their rights outside the education minister’s residence including the leadership provided by Front president Jaswinder Kaur who is disabled. Both Majithia and Dr Cheema assured support to the Teachers Front even as they warned both chief minister Bhagwant Mann and AAP Convener Arvind Kejriwal to fulfill the promises made to the youth or be ready to face their ire.
