School of Languages JGND PSOU conducts National Workshop on Linguistics, Phonetics and Communication

The School of Languages, Jagat Guru Nanak Dev Punjab State Open University (JGND PSOU), Patiala organized one-week (29th April to 4th May 2024)National Workshop on “Linguistics, Phonetics and Communication”. Prof. Karamjeet Singh, Vice-Chancellor, JGND PSOU eulogised the endeavour of School of Languages for providing skill enhancement opportunity to the participants. “This unique workshop-cum-capacity building programme aimed to acquaint the participants with the nuances of phonetics and linguistics, processes of language acquisition and discourse analysis,” he observed.
Prof. Deepti Gupta, Department of English & Cultural Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh ;Dr. Navleen Multani, Head, School of Languages, JGND PSOU; Dr. Garima Dalal, Linguistic Empowerment Cell, School of Language Literature and Culture Studies JNU University, Delhi; Dr. Keshav Nath, Manipal University, Jaipur, Rajasthan; Dr. Apara Sharma, Department of English, MCM DAV College for Women, Chandigarh; Dr. Raj Kumar Sharma, Department of English & Cultural Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh; Dr. Vinod Kumar, JGND PSOU and Dr. Hira Irshad, Greater Noida were Resource Persons for the workshop.
Technical sessions during the one- week workshop acquainted learners, faculty and PhD scholars with nuances of linguistic analysis. The first technical session focused on language variation and change. Dr. Navleen Multani elaborated on socio-historical and anthropological perspectives that highlight linguistic diversity. “ Knowledge about language provides insights into linguistic patterns and aspects of human behaviour,” she said. Dr. Keshav Nath apprised the participants with theories of Second Language Acquisition. In the third technical session, Dr. GarimaDalal, JNU Delhi, explored the sensory and articulatory processes of language. She trained the participants in acoustics, auditory and articulatory phonetics. Sessions on Listening, Speaking, Reading skills was taken by Dr Apara Sharma; Dr Raj Kumar Sharma elaborated on Semantics, Pragmatics an Discourse Analysis. Dr Vinod Kumar elaborated on classification of sounds. Dr Hira Irshad demonstrated correct pronunciation of consonant and vowel sounds. She took practice session on phonetic transcription and highlighted problematics of pronunciation. Prof Deepti Gupta, in the valedictory session, focused on effective communication. She delved into the problems that lead to gap in communication. Prof Deepti Gupta accentuated the role of paralinguistics and non-verbal communication also.

Participants including students, research scholars and faculty from JGND PSOU, Punjabi University, Chandigarh University, SRM University Sonipat, Guru Kashi Open University, Govt. State College of Education Patiala, Public College Samana, S.D. College of Education Barnala, St. Gregorios College Kottarakkara Kerala, and Govt. Kamla Raja Girls Postgraduate Autonomous College Gwalior attended the workshop. The sessions were moderated by Dr Vinod Kumar and Gursandesh Singh.
