School of Management Studies, Punjabi University, Patiala is organizing a one-week national workshop on ‘Data Analytics using R and R-Studio’ from 16th to 22nd September 2022. It was inaugurated by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Arvind.
This seven-day comprehensive program is focused on open and free source software platforms helpful in the area of academics and research. The workshop is being attended by around 40 university and college teachers and researchers, who have come from various states from all over the country.
Dr. Navjot Kaur, Professor and Head, School of Management Studies said that the department from time to time always come up with timely academic endeavors which are relevant to the current times. While unfolding the theme of the workshop, she said that gone are the days of licensed software where specific companies used to enjoy absolute monopoly and used to charge exorbitant prices for their software and updates. Today, the academic and research community has a number of choices from free and open software platforms. Only awareness and learning of these varied open-source platforms is yet missing in the academic community. This Seven Days long workshop is a step towards providing in-depth and hands on experience to one of the most powerful and widely used open-source platform that is R and R-Studio.
She said during the course of technical sessions, the eminent experts from different parts of the country will be addressing the participants, notably among them are – Dr Manoj Kumar Diwakar, from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi; Professor Suresh Kumar Sharma, from Panjab University, Chandigarh; Dr Tanveer Kajla, NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad; and Professor Kapil Hari Paranjape, an eminent mathematician from Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Mohali.

Professor Arvind, Vice Chancellor, Punjabi University in his Inaugural Speech applauded the efforts of the department and congratulated the head of department and workshop coordinators Dr. Sandeep Virdi, Dr. Parneet Kaur and Dr. Shavina Goel for organizing this workshop which has practical usability for the researchers and teachers. He said not only the future but the present also belongs to open-source platforms that provide freedom to use the software at no cost to the users. The academic and research institutes can hugely benefit from such open-source software such as R, LibreOffice, LaTeX, Mathematica etc. all provides a lot of capabilities and applications useful for both the qualitative and quantitative researches. He said that he is very happy to see that there are delegates and resource persons from all over the country.
