Senior akali leader’s nephew turns foe; left SAD joins SSM

Today nephew (Bhanja) of senior akali dal leader Prem Singh Chandumajra, Harvinder Singh Harpalpur left shiromani akali dal and joins samyukt samaj morcha (SSM) in the presence of senior kisan leader Balbir Singh Rajewal , Prem Singh Bhangu and other SSM leaders.
Harvinder Singh Harpalpur, a senior SAD leader and former chairman Market Committee Patiala and chairman Khadi and village industries board Punjab, is a nephew of Prem Singh Chandumjra and cousin of MLA from Sanaur Harinderpal Singh Chandumajra.
Harpalpur is demanding shiromani akali dal ticket from Ghanaur /Rajpura constituencies. But, party president Sukhbir Singh Badal gave Ghanaur ticket to Prem Singh Chandumajra and Rajpura to Charanjit Singh Brar.
While inducting Harvinder Singh Harpulpur to SSM’s fold Rajewal said, “ the morcha has finalized the seat sharing with Gurnam Singh Chudduni. Now Chudduni group will fight on ten seats. The morcha will release the candidates list by today evening.”
When contacted Harvinder Singh Harpalpur, he said “ I joined the SSM without any deal, promise, demand. If the morcha wants to fight upcoming elections, from anywhere in Punjab, I’ll fight the elections from that seat.”
In good times, Prof. Prem Singh Chandumajara had always said that Harvinder Singh Harpalpur is a very devoted and loyal worker of the SAD who always stood by the party even in odd times. But due to denial of party ticket to local resident of Ghanaur and giving to an outsider, the relationship between Chandumajra and Harpalpur turns ugly.
Last week, party chief Arvind Kejriwal said they were in talks with SSM president Balbir Singh Rajewal for an alliance but it hadn’t worked out because the latter was demanding more tickets than AAP could give. He also admitted that the SSM’s decision to go it alone would hit AAP the hardest.
