SGPC got its president through election

Today shiromani gurudwara prabandhak committee SGPC elected its president Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami trough voting. The last time a SGPC president elected through voting was in 2011. After that, all the SGPC presidents were elected through nomination.
Earlier shiromani akali dal proposed the name of Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami for the post of president shiromani gururdwara prabhandhak committee (SGPC) and Bhagwant Singh Sialaka, present general secretary, seconded it. On this the opponents raised the objection and fielded their candidate Mithu Singh Kaneka for the post of president.
After this, the incumbent SGPC president Jagir Kaur ordered the election process and called the sgpc members, one by one for voting. Dhami got 122 votes and his opponent got 19 votes. Ragujit Singh Virk is the new senior vice president and Principal Surinder Singh is the new junior vice president.
SGPC got its president through election. Dhami is a SGPC member from Sham Churasi in Hoshiarpur district. His name was also considered last year but the SAD supremo selected Jagir kaur for the post. Others in the fray are former president Kirpal Singh badungar and Balbir Singh Ghunas.
The present house consist 191 members, of which, 170 are elected from different areas including Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Chandigarh, 15 members are nominated from all over the country, six members include Jathedars of five Takht Sahibs and Head Granthi of Sachkhand Sri Harmandir Sahib. Among these 30 seats are reserved for women.
