As per Shiromani Gurudwara Prabhandak Committee, National Highway Authority of India has demolished a symbolic gate constructed in 1972 on the Guru Gobind Singh Marg at Sahnewal in Ludhiana district and had shown disrespect to Sikh religious symbols.

As per reports, during the demolition of the memorial gate, the sikh symbol Khanda and the name of Guru Gobind Singh was not removed by the authorities, beforehand. The JCB machine directly demolished the gate without removing the Khanda and the name of the Guru sahib. The concrete structure smashes on the road and the sikh symbol, name of Guru Gobind Singh also break into pieces.

SGPC in a tweet to the union road minister Nitin Gadkari, CM Punjab , chief secretary Punjab, Ludhiana police, PWD minister Harbhajan Singh and cultural minister Anmol Gagan Mann said “Welcome development by @NHAI_Official , but disrespect to Sikh symbol Khanda & Guru’s name as seen in video .

SGPC strongly condemned & unbearable. It is the responsibility of Govts to maintain the sanctity of Guru Gobind Singh Marg & improve its condition besides that of milestones & memorials attached to it. Strict action should be taken against officials responsible for this negligence. There is a Maryada (conduct) to deal with or handle Sikh symbols & places that have Sikh sentiments attached.

When contacted NHAI officer Pulkit, he said” we had followed all the rituals before demolishing the gate. Gurudwara Roru Sahib Bhaiji had performed the Ardas, before this act. If we had done hammering to remove them beforehand, they might had got damaged or break into pieces as the material used was of wrought iron. NHAI is already constructing a similar gate just a through away site as the present gate (demolished) was a black spot and hampering the smooth traffic flow. The construction of the new and big gate is already going on.”
