Shikhar Rallan of YPS is state badminton champion; selected for nationals

A young Badminton player from Yadavindra Public School, Patiala won the Punjab State Badminton Championship 2019 recently held in Amritsar.

In a six-day long championship recently held in Amritsar, Shikhar Rallan of class VIII had participated in (Under 15) singles and men’s doubles categories in The Punjab State Badminton Championship 2019. He bagged Gold medal in U-15 Boys Doubles and Silver medal in Mixed Doubles. After his scintillating performance, he has secured a place in the Nationals, scheduled to be held in the month of December.

This avid shuttler has participated and won several State and National level tournaments. His winning spree started in year 2017 during Punjab State Badminton Championship, where he won Bronze medal in U-13 Boys Singles and a Silver medal in Doubles. In All India IPSC Boys Championship 2018, he clinched Silver medal in U-14 Boys Singles. He had also represented Punjab in various National championships and had been ranked amongst top 8 players of the tournament.

Shikhar is currently under training in the most prestigious Gopichand Badminton Academy in Hyderabad. He is undergoing challenging training session of about 6-8 hrs per day to win upcoming National Championships. He considers his father, Vishal Rallan, a Civil Engineer by profession and a former International badminton player, as an inspiration. “He used to accompany his father for the matches. That’s how he developed his interest for the shuttlecock and racquet,” said his mother, Dr. Poonam Rallan, who is a speech and hearing specialist.

On being asked about how he manage with the study and games, he credited his victories to the school authorities for being supportive. “I am here due to the support and encouragement of my teachers and the school authorities. As most of my time is dedicated to the sport, my teachers have always helped me catch up with the studies during exams. I am indebted to all,” said Shikhar while expressing deep reverence towards his school.

YPS has produced maximum number of National and International players in the region so far. The players like Shikhar have proven their mettle time and again and are the real testimony of untiring efforts put up by the school for shaping the champions of tomorrow.
