“Sikhya Daat” launched by JGNDPSO University for inmates of Punjab jails

Jagat Guru Nanak Dev Punjab State Open University Patiala, in collaboration with the Prison Department of Punjab Government has launched a special program “Sikhya Daat” to impart education to the inmates of Punjab jails. Prof. Karamjeet Singh, Vice Chancellor of the University, said that it is a great initiative towards the development of good human values among the jail inmates; through this program higher education would be imparted to the inmates of Punjab jails, which would enhance their mental development and further enable them to become economically self-dependent in future.
Prof. Karamjeet Singh said that various jails will work under “Learner Support Centers” located in the different districts of Punjab. The course mentoring/learning, admission process and the exams will also be conducted through the “Learner Support Center”.
Vice Chancellor Dr. Karamjeet Singh also told that in this program, Dr. G.S. Batra, Director, Planning and Monitoring of the University has been appointed as the Nodal Officer. Dr. Batra further informed that the program is divided into three categories, in which the University is placed under ‘Sub category-C’ for imparting higher education to the jail inmates. He further told that so far 118 prisoners have expressed their desire to participate in this program, which is a great social responsibility effort of the university under the visionary leadership of Vice Chancellor JGND PSOU.
Registrar of the university Dr. Dharam singh Sandhu said that this program is a need of the hour in order to transform the jail inmates into good human being through the holistic education imparted by Jagat Guru Nank Dev Punjab state Open University.He further said that the university will provide high quality education to the jail inmates through course material prepared by expert faculty members.
