Slapping a man proves costly for district collector; State govt transfers IAS officer

Ranbir Sharma, IAS, the collector of Surajpur district, in Chhattisgarh has been transferred, after a video of an incident has gone viral on social media, in which the collector slaps the youth, asked cops to beat him up and ordered an FIR against him, as the boy could not properly explain why he was out when the town was under a lockdown.

Following this, he slaps the youth even as he tries to show him some papers to explain why he is outdoors during the lockdown. On orders of the collector, police have also filed an FIR against the boy for over-speeding the bike when intercepted by the police.

After the incident was highlighted on social media, the state chief minister Bhupesh Baghel orders removal of Surajpur collector Ranbir Sharma for slapping youth and tweeted “An incident of Surajpur district collector Ranbir Sharma misbehaving with a young man has been brought to my attention by social media. This is extremely unfortunate and condemnable. No such incident shall be tolerated in Chhattisgarh. Have given instructions to remove collector Ranbir Sharma with immediate effect,” a rough translation of Baghel’s tweet, posted in Hindi, read.

The IAS Association also condemned the incident, tweeting: “We strongly condemn the behaviour of collector Surajpur, Chhattisgarh. It is unacceptable and against the basic tenets of the service and civility. Civil servants must have empathy and provide a healing touch to society at all times, more so in these difficult times.”
