Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University Organises Workshop on “Hands-on training on Spectrophotometers 2024”

A five-day workshop on “Hands-on training on Spectrophotometers 2024” started at Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University, Fatehgarh Sahib. The workshop has been organised under the aegis of the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of the University to inculcate practical knowledge on Spectroscopy in the students.

Dr. Rahul Badru, Head of Chemistry department and the incharge of the Central Instrumentation Facility shared that the Central Instrumentation Facility was established in the University in August 2020. The laboratory is equipped with sophisticated Spectroscopic instruments worth Rs. 1.5 crores. He added that more than hundred students from various departments including Chemistry, Physics, Food processing technology, Biotechnology and Zoology participated in this workshop.

In the keynote address, Prof. Tejbir Singh, Registrar of the University motivated the participants for using Spectrophotometers as diagnostic tools. He made students aware of the basic instrumentation and functioning of the Spectrophotometers and also elaborated the applications of FTIR, UV-Visible, XRD, NMR, Fluorescence and PL spectrophotometric techniques in structure elucidation, food industry, paint industry, biology, medicine and environmental sampling.

In the post-lunch session, Dr. Rahul Badru, Incharge CIF, explained the instrumentation and working of FTIR spectrophotometer in detail. He also stressed on the applications of FTIR spectroscopy in fields ranging from pharmaceuticals to sampling of food stuffs and environment. He gave practical demonstration on FTIR with different samples brought by students themselves. Later, students were divided into groups and gained hands on training of the instrument.

Prof. Prit Pal Singh, the Vice-Chancellor of the University and Prof. Sukhwinder Singh Billing, Dean Academic Affairs graced the occasion. The Vice-chancellor congratulated and encouraged the participants and organizers for their efforts. Dr. Billing highlighted the importance of arranging such workshops and events as they impart practical skills among the students.

During the inaugural session, IQAC director Dr. Ramesh Arora and IQAC co-ordinator Dr. Ankdeep Kaur Attwal marked their presence. Dr Preet Kaur, Head Department of Physics, Dr. Rupinder Pal Singh, Incharge Department of Food Processing Technology and Dr Monika Airi from Department of Zoology participated in the workshop.
