Tear gas takes first casualty of farmers ‘Delhi Challo’ protests; protesting farmer dies

A senior citizen farmer, who was among the farmers protesting at the Shambhu on Punjab-Haryana border, died of a heart attack on Friday.

As per available information, Gian Singh, who was from Chacheki village in Gurdaspur district was a member of the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee (KMSC), a constituent unit of the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM).

He along with other farmers had reached Shambhu border on February 13. On February 14, when shelling started, Gian Singh had gone near that location where tear gas shells were being lobbed. He inhaled it and had been feeling uneasy since then.

He was sleeping in a trolley along with five other farmers about a kilometre away from the hambhu barrier site when he reported feeling uneasy at around 3 am. He was taken to the hospital.

However, he was referred to Rajindra Medical College, Patiala, as he was feeling breathless. Few hours later he died at the hospital.

As per his nephew, “on February 14, when shelling started, Gian Singh had gone near that location where tear gas shells were being lobbed. He inhaled it and had been feeling uneasy since then. He was shifted to a private hospital and later to civil hospital Rajpura. From Rajpura he was shifted to Rajindra Hospital, Patiala. Today, he died at 5 in the morning due cardiac arrest as per medical records. Tear gas has taken our uncle Gian Singh’s life”

Gian Singh was a bachelor and stayed with his nephews. The family has property of about 1.5 acres.
