THE 30TH Col Frank Von Goldstein Memorial debate culminated at YPS

The 30th Edition of Col Frank Von Goldstein Memorial Debate culminated on YPS, Patiala, Today on August 25. This debate was conducted in the memory of Col Frank Von Goldstein (former Headmaster and an iconic figure of the school), who initiated this debate in 1988.

Air Marshal Kulwant Singh Gill, PVSM, AVSM, YSM, VM (G) graced the occasion as a Chief guest. As many as 16 schools from all over India participated in this battle of words. The teams were:

  1. Armed Forces Preparatory Institute, Mohali
  2. Army Public School, Ambala Cantt
  3. Bhawan Vidyalaya, Sec 27 B, Chandigarh
  4. Gen Gurnam Singh Public School, Sangrur
  5. Mayo College, Ajmer
  6. MGD Girl’s School, Jaipur
  7. Punjab Public School, Nabha
  8. Rajmata Krishan Kumari Girls Public School, Jodhpur
  9. The British Co-ed School, Patiala
  10. The Mann Public School, Delhi
  11. Vidya Devi Jindal School, Hisar
  12. Vivek High school, Chandīgarh
  13. Welham Boys’ School, Dehradun
  14. Welham Girls’ School, Dehradun
  15. Yadavindra Public School, Mohali
  16. Yadavindra Public School, Patiala

The competition was split in four phases: Preliminary, Quarter, Semi Final and Final. Four teams had qualified for the Semi finals and hardliner debate after defeating other teams in preliminary and quarter final rounds held earlier. The topics of the debates were related to AI, Internet content, Media freedom, Parenting and reservations in society. The final round of the battle of words culminated with much excitement.

The intense research done by the teams was evident in their confidence, clarity of content, persuasive speech and body language. There were a lot of arguments and counter arguments. The team members spoke eloquently about their topics.

The esteemed panel of Judges included  Anu Brar, Daman Sandhu,  Ratan Mala, Dr. Sabreena Sandhu,  Charu Garg,  Rishma Sandhu, Ravneet Ahluwalia,  Aruna Batra,  Preetinder Kaur, Anju Pande,  Sonia Sharma, Naveen Verma, Sukhwinder Gill, Manju Mahondroo, Gurpreet Brar, Dr. Mona Grewal, Dr. Aayeena Sood, Reena Nagpal.

There was a Hardliners debate prior to the final round of debate. Mayo College, Ajmer and Rajmata Krishan Kumari Girls Public School, Jodhpur were the participants of the Hardliners debate. The topic was “The New Education Policy is a Social Gimmick”. After the debate, Rajmata Krishan Kumari Girls Public School, Jodhpur team won the Hardliner debate.

The two teams to reach the final round of debate were Yadavindra Public School, Mohali and Yadavindra Public School, Patiala.

THE 30TH Col Frank Von Goldstein Memorial debate culminated at YPS. In the final round of debate, Yadavindra Public School, Mohali and Yadavindra Public School, Patiala gave each other a tough competition on topic “World Peace is a Delusion”, but the arguments made by Yadavindra Public School, Mohali students against the topic helped them clinch the prestigious 30TH COL FRANK VON GOLDSTEIN MEMORIAL DEBATE.

Air Marshal Kulwant Singh Gill, PVSM, AVSM, YSM, VM (G) congratulated the winners during his speech. He emphasised on the importance of communication, debating and confidence in students’ life. The final debate was judged by Prof. Harjeshwar Singh, Samar Singh Dhaliwal and Simran Tiwana.
