Thoracic surgery starts at AIIMS, Bathinda

With the persistent encouragement & guidance of Executive Director, Prof. Dr. D.K. Singh, Dept. of General Surgery, AIIMS Bathinda ,has started the services of thoracic surgery in the institute. The index case was of a 54-year-old female diagnosed with a large chondrosarcoma tumour of the chest wall that was close to the heart. This is a rare disease which requires an expert team & special equipment for operation. The first surgery of its kind in the region was performed by the team including Dr. Jaspreet Shergill, Dr. Harmandeep Singh Jabbal with special anaesthesia team of Dr. Gopal & Dr. Gegal. The operation lasted for 4 hours & the tumour was removed successfully. The patient was discharged after 5 days in a healthy condition.

Dr. M.P. Singh, Head of the Dept. of General Surgery stated that this was a beginning of a varied spectrum of major cases in the institute. The department plans to start minimally invasive thoracoscopic (VATS) procedures soon for lung and other thoracic diseases.

Col. Dr. Satish Gupta, Dean, congratulated the dept. for the distinguished surgery. Earlier these procedures were not being conducted in this region & now the people of Bathinda & neighbouring areas can avail the benefits of these major surgeries at affordable costs here at AIIMS, Bathinda.
