A Three-Day Workshop (21st to 23rd June, 2022) on Digital Archiving Tools commenced in the Department of English, Punjabi University, Patiala today. The workshop is being organised as part of Global Shakespeare Studies under the aegis of English Literary Society of the Department. It is being conducted by Vijeta Saini, a doctoral candidate from Northeastern University, Boston, US. Twenty eight research scholars and members of the faculty from the Department are participating in the workshop. Dr. Dharamjeet Singh, the coordinator of the workshop welcomed the participants and introduced the resource person. Dr. Rajesh Sharma, Head, Department of English introduced the topic and discussed the contemporary relevance of digital humanities and data archiving.

On the first day, Saini introduced digital humanities, its significance and relevance for contemporary research practices. Delving into the various complexities of archival research, she talked about how digital humanities address the structures and processes of marginalisation in the creation of archives. The second session of the workshop dealt with Critical Archival Theory. She elaborated on how archives function and how power operates in the formation and management of digital archives. In this context, she emphasized that the critical archival tools enable one to negotiate the dynamics of power relations in the process of archiving. The day ended with an exercise given to the research scholars to demonstrate the use of archival tools.
