Punjab advocate general (AG) Amar Preet Singh Deol , who was  appointed the AG Punjab on September 27, but he resigned on November 1 today lashed out at Punjab Pradesh congress committee president Navjot Singh Sidhu, accusing him of “obstructing the functioning of the government”.

Yesterday, in a press conference at Chandigarh Navjot Singh Sidhu had criticised Charanjit Singh Channi government over appointment of Deol and resigned from his post. Sidhu has now taken back his resignation, he said he will return to his duties as the state unit chief the day new advocate general and director general of police is appointed.

Lashing out at the Congress leader, Deol said in a statement today, “There is a concerted attempt by vested interests to malign the functioning of Congress Party in view of upcoming elections in Punjab for their selfish political gain by politicising the constitutional office of the Advocate General of Punjab.”

“Navjot Singh Sidhu’s repeated utterances seek to derail the earnest efforts of the State govt to ensure justice in the drugs matter and the sacrilege cases. Sidhu is spreading misinformation to gain political advantage over his political colleagues,” he further said in the statement. He was appointed on September 27, but resigned on November 1.

Today’s twist in Punjab politics- Deol accuses Sidhu for spreading misinformation. Till now, Punjab government has not accepted the resignation of APS Deol as AG Punjab. So far, the state government has not finalised Deol’s replacement, though names of a few senior advocates are being considered. Deol was appointed after the post fell vacant following Atul Nanda’s resignation soon after Capt Amarinder Singh stepped down as chief minister.

Sidhu is objecting on Deol appointment as AG Punjab, because Deol, being DGP Sumedh Saini and IG Paramraj Singh Umaranangal’s counsel, would neither be able to appear nor advise the state in their cases and related matters. In an attempt to settle the storm, senior advocate RS Bains was appointed special public prosecutor.
