Two-in-One: sole member of PPSC becomes Chairman-cum-Member

Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC), a premier recruiting agency for the Punjab Government has created history by giving the additional charge of commission’s chairman to its sole member, since its formation. Now, the sole member will work as Chairman-cum-Member.
Today, the state government has given the charge of commission’s chairman to Harmohan Kaur Sandhu who is the only member of the commission. Author and Columnist Harmohan Kaur Sandhu (Bubbu Tir)was appointed on August 20,2019 by the Capt Amarinder Singh led Congress government. The term of Harmohan Kaur Sandhu as member is going to expire on August 19,2025.
The interesting part is Harmohan Kaur Sandhu is the lone member of the commission. Now, she will be the Chairman-cum-Member of the commission. All the member seats are already vacant and no member is appointed by the present government. The chairman, Jatinder Singh Aulakh, IPS was retired on January 3,2025. Since then the post remains vacant. The state government has already invited the application on 26.11.2024, 14.12.2024, 24.12.2024 and January 13,2025 for the post of Chairman. The deadline for submission of applications is 5:00 PM on March 15, 2025.
The commission has already announced the recruitment of various Punjab Government posts. Now, she will handle the recruitment process, single handily, till the new chairman joins.
History of the Commission
Joint Public Service Commission, the precursor of the Punjab Public Service Commission, with its writ running from the Khyber pass to the Jamuna near Delhi, was born at Lahore on may 1,1937. In the wake of the partition, the Punjab Public Service Commission resurged in February, 1948, at Shimla with its revised jurisdiction extending over the then province of East Punjab. Following the merger of the states of Punjab and Pepsu, it shifted to Patiala on Nov.1st,1956. On 1st Nov 1966, its territorial jurisdiction again decreased due to the formation of the states of Haryana and Himachal Pradesh.
