Universities to celebrate Surgical Strike day on Sept 29-UGC

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has written to the Vice-Chancellors of all universities to celebrate Surgical Strike Day on September 29 to mark the event along the Line of Control that day in 2016.

In a letter issued by Secretary UGC, Prof. Rajnish jain to all the Vice Chancellors of universities said that “All higher education institutions with NCC units shall organise a special parade on 29th September, after which the NCC commander shall address them on the modalities of protection of the borders,”. “The university/colleges may organise a meeting, calling ex-servicemen who will sensitize the students about the sacrifices made by the armed forces in protecting the borders.”

The letter also issues an instruction to students: “The students shall pledge their support for the armed forces by writing letters and cards, which may be produced in both physical and digital format.” These letters of support, it says, will be publicised in the conventional and social media.

The letter further informed that “A multimedia exhibition would be organized around India gate on September 29. Similar exhibition may be organized at all the state capitals/ UTs and important towns/ cantonment all over the India. The exhibition will be a public event and HEIs (Higher Education Institutes) may encourage faculty and students to visit this exhibition”. The letter also desires that students pledge their support for the armed forces in writing that day.

Former IPS Officer and Member Parliament Simranjit Singh Mann who is also a President of Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) said in a press statement that “this act of BJP ruled govt will increase the tension in the border state of Punjab, HP, J&K, Gujrat. As both countries have nuclear weapons, this act may increase the tension on the border and may push the countries into war”. This act will infuse hate in the minds of young students. He further appealed to the students of all the universities of Punjab to celebrate this day as a peace day.
