Talwandi Sabo Power Limited (TSPL), a subsidiary of Vedanta Power and North India’s largest private thermal power producer, celebrated World Environment Day with a strong message of ecological responsibility and community involvement. A series of awareness and action-driven events were organized at the plant premises and in community as well, reinforcing the company’s long-standing commitment to sustainability.

To mark the occasion, a large-scale plantation drive was held at TSPL, witnessing the active participation of Punjab Pollution Control Board’s Executive Environmental Engineer Ravideep Singla who along with senior officials from the Mansa District’s Forest Department joined the TSPL team. More than 500 saplings were planted as part of the initiative, with plans to plant over 15,000 trees throughout the year.

Employees and officials at TSPL also took a pledge to combat plastic pollution and adopt eco-friendly practices in their daily lives. The event featured prize distribution by Ravideep Singla for winners of in-house competitions, including quizzes, slogan writing, and poster-making activities that encouraged environmental awareness.

These events form part of TSPL’s broader mission to drive environmental restoration and sustainable development in Punjab. As part of its long-term strategy, the company has implemented several initiatives that contribute significantly to plastic use and carbon emission reduction and building a circular economy. It has ensured that the site remains single-use plastic free for which they have been certified by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

TSPL has enabled the creation of Punjab’s largest torrefied bio-pellets ecosystem manufacturing by supporting its partners to set up a manufacturing plant near its premises. This facility transforms stubble, a major source of seasonal air pollution, into carbon-neutral fuel, enabling a 5% reduction in coal use and an anticipated reduction of 1.5 million tons of CO emissions over time.

During the last paddy season, TSPL facilitated the procurement of over 800,000 tons of crop residue from local farmers. This not only helped prevent stubble burning on over 20,000 acres but also turned agricultural waste into a source of income for the farming community, preventing nearly 1.16 million tons of CO emissions.

Rajinder Singh Ahuja, CEO- Power at Vedanta Ltd. said, “At Vedanta Power, our commitment goes beyond powering homes, we are equally focused on powering a greener, more sustainable future. TSPL’s transition from conventional coal usage to biomass co-firing and circular economy practices is a testament to this vision. By turning Agri-waste stubble into clean energy, conserving water, and nurturing green cover, we are accelerating Punjab’s clean energy journey while creating long-term value for communities and the planet.”

TSPL’s impact on the local environment is also evident in its afforestation efforts. Since 2011, the company has expanded its green cover from just under 6 acres to over 800 acres now which is home to 33 native plant species and a dedicated medicinal plant garden. In the past, it has been featured in the Guinness World Record in 2015 for planting over 2,08,000 saplings in under an hour.

Promoting clean mobility, it introduced EVs on-site and launched a rural EV initiative for women, projected to generate ₹5 lakh overtime.

From curbing emissions and promoting biodiversity to building green infrastructure and uplifting rural livelihoods, TSPL continues to lead by example-proving that industrial progress and environmental stewardship can go hand in hand.
