After weeks of protest at Panjab University in Chandigarh, the Vice President of India, has approved the long pending demands of students, alumni, faculty and releases the dates and schedule for elections to the PU senate to be held next year.

Vice President of India is the chancellor of this prestigious university. Now, the elections for various constituencies will be held between September 9 and October 4, 2026, officials said on Thursday.

PU officials said on Thursday that the election schedule submitted by the university has been approved by Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan. Senate is a Panjab University’s primary decision-making body.

PU students, under the banner of Panjab University Bachao Morcha, have been protesting and pressing for a schedule for the election. The initial phase of the protest was launched against the Centre’s decision to restructure Panjab University’s governing bodies — the senate and the syndicate.

However, the Ministry of Education, on November 7, withdrew its October 28 notification for changing the constitution and composition of the bodies, following mounting pressure from various political leaders and protesting students.

The students, however, refused to end their agitation, pressing for the announcement of a schedule for the senate election.

Student leaders, however, stated that their agitation will continue until remaining issues are resolved. Among their pending demands is the withdrawal of criminal cases filed against protesters who had clashed with the police.
