On November 10,2022, the District Bar Association (DBA), Patiala passed a resolution of not working post lunch to watch the T20 Cricket World Cup semifinal match played between India and England.

Just ahead of the do-or-die clash in Australia, the District Bar Association (DBA) of Patiala announced that all work at the district courts in Patiala shall remain suspended after lunch in view of the T20 World Cup match.This act of DBA, Patiala was condemned by everyone. Taking cognizance of this, the Bar Council of Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh has issue a show cause notice to the President, DBA, patiala.

When contacted the President, Bar Council Punjab , Haryana and Chandigrah, Suvir Sidhu, he said “ yes, we have written a letter and sought a explanation from them, on this matter. This act of DBA Patiala has brought bad name to the advocate fraternity. We have ask the President, DBA to submit his written explanation by November 26,2022 and provide the council with a valid cause as to why appropriate action should not be taken in this regard. ”

The notice issued by, Bar Council Punjab , Haryana and Chandigrah  read “The council is astonished to see the above mentioned notice issued by you in the capacity of President, district bar association, Patiala. Bar council believes in observing high morale/ ethical/ etiquette values in all respects and expects the same from all bar associations, more importantly from its elected representatives. Those who live by the law should keep the law. An advocate is considered as an officer of the court, honoured member of the community, a gentleman, thinking that to become a member of the Bar he has to be lawful and morale not only in his professional capacity but also in his non-professional capacity. Advocates have a continuing responsibility to uphold the fundamental principle of justice from the law cannot depart, further to insure that acess to justice should never be put on hold.”

On November 10,2022 a notification was published by the District Bar Association of Patiala that read, “Today an emergency meeting of the executive was convened and held under the Presidentship of Adv Jatinder Pal Singh Ghuman held that due Semi Final Match T-20 World cup between India Vs. England today i.e. 10/11/2022 at about 1:30 PM. It is therefore resolved that the DBA, Patiala will observe No Work after lunch in District Courts, Patiala.”

The Bar Association had even requested the judicial officers to adjourn the matters listed on November 10,2022 afternoon to some other dates.

“All Respected Judicial Officers, Revenue Courts, Presiding officers of Tribunals, and Commissioner Court are requested to adjourn the matters listed today to some other dates,” the notification said.
