With the change of guard in Punjab state, are bureaucrats facing the music?

Kanwar Inder Singh/ April 14,2023

After the formation of aam admi party (AAP) in the border state of India, Punjab, the conception that ‘bureaucrats run the government’ has seem to be changed, at least in the state of Punjab.

As per normal belief the bureaucrats normally rule the state as they assign government policy to consider the laws enacted by elected authorities and carry them out successfully. These are permanent professional staff members of the executive branch of Government. These individuals’ primary responsibility is to aid the operation of government agencies, although they report to the ministries.

Earlier, opposition leveled allegations against the previous government that “the government is being run by bureaucrats” But, in the last one year, the things have changed considerably. Now, once considered as ‘high profile’ IAS officers in the state bureaucracy, are not given postings for months.

Like Sarvjit Singh, Gurkirat Kirpal Singh, Nilkanth S Avadh are among the senior IAS  officers who remained ‘blue eyed’ boys in the previous governments. But, in this govt they had to remain without postings for weeks.

With the change of guard in Punjab state, are bureaucrats facing the music?

With the change of guard in Punjab state, are bureaucrats facing the music? The officer who opposed to any government decisions is changed immediately and is sidelined. This is also the case of ministers. The minister portfolios are also changed. Some of the key posts like the public relations department, food procurement departments, health etc in the government have seen many bureaucrats since March 2022.

As per available information, still, few IAS officers namely Ajoy Sharma, Neelima, Gagandeep Singh Brar, Tanu Kashyap, Alaknanda Dayal are waiting for postings. Even, another senior IAS office Rahul Tiwari, who was without postings for almost two months, has given posting in yesterday’s bureaucratic reshuffle.

In India, bureaucrats are known to be the officials that run the government sector at administrative levels as well as ministerial levels and also they are known as executives that run the corporate sector at managerial and directorial level.
