Women’s Studies Centre of Punjabi university organized International conference-Dr Lehal

Women’s Studies Centre, Punjabi University, Patiala organized 12th International Conference on “Safety and Security of Women in the contemporary World : Issues and Challenges” on 4th Dec. 2020 through the on-line mode. Vice Chancellor, Punjabi University, Patiala Ravneet Kaur presided over the inaugural session. She applauded Dr. Ritu Lehal, Director, Women’s Studies Centre, Punjabi University, Patiala and her team for organizing the conference on a very relevant theme. Dr.Ritu Lehal welcomed the distinguished guests and delegates.

The Chief Guest, Gurjeet Singh Aujla, Member of Parliament from Amritsar emphasized on education of girls as the key to resolving issues of abuse and violence against women. Gurpreet Kaur Deo, Additional Director General of Police, Punjab was the special guest on the occasion. Deo shared her practical experiences regarding violece and crime against women in India. She highlighted administrative efforts that have been made and that still need to be made to ensure safety of women in a prejudiced and patriarchal Indian Society.

Dr. Anne Murphy, Associate Professor, Asian Studies & Lead, Interdisciplinary History Research Clsster, University of BC, Canada, delivered the inagural address. She talked about the condition of women as portrayed in Punjabi Literature with special reference to Dr.Dalip Kaur Tiwana and Ajit Kaur. Dr. Opinderjit Kaur Takhar, Associate Professor of Sikh Studies and Director of the Centre for Sikh & Punjabi Studies at the University of Wolverhampton, UK was the guest of Honour. Dr.Takhar talked in detail about the position of women as portrayed and envisioned by Shri Guru Nanak Dev ji. She emphasized on the deeper understanding and adoption of Guru Nanak’s spirit of reverence for women.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Ravneet Kaur delivered the Presidential address. Madam Vice-Chancellor highlighted the need to inculcate a sense of respect for a woman’s opinions in personal relationships and in society at large. A documentary titled ‘Phulkari’ was shown and a manual related to a project being run by the Women’s Studies Centre was inaugurated. Dr.Harpreet Kaur, Associate Prof. of Commerce proposed the formal Vote of thanks. About fifty research papers were presented during three technical sessions of the conference.
