World Food Day celebrated in MRSPTU Bathinda

The Department of Food Science and Technology, Maharaja Ranjit Singh Punjab Technical University (MRSPTU), Bathinda celebrated World Food Day on the theme of “ Our Actions Are Our Future” at Campus on 16th October . This day is celebrated every year across the world in an honor of the foundation day of the Food and Agriculture Organization of United Nation Organization.
The students celebrated the day with great zeal and enthusiasm. Students participated in different events like Poster Presentation, Slogan writing, Extempore, Quiz, Essay Writing on the theme of “Zero Hunger” etc.
Dr. Kawaljit Singh Sandhu, Head of the Department while delivering talk said that our country is producing enough food crops but ranks poorly in terms of Global hunger index; the rank of India is 102 out of 117 countries. He told that 19 crores of our population sleeps with empty stomach. On one hand we have population which is starving for hunger and on the contradiction we are wasting huge food crops. About 18% of fruits and vegetables and 6% of cereal crops are wasted due to lack of infrastructure and processing facilities. He added that only 2% of the fruits and vegetables are processed at present. So, celebrating World Food Day in present scenario in its true spirit is very important.
Dr.Ashish Baldi, Registrar of MRSPTU while addressing the students motivates them to enlighten the society for zero wastage of food. He said it’s the responsibility of everyone not to waste food and share surplus food with those who cannot afford to eat thrice a day. Afterwards, the whole department took pledge to fight against hunger and food wastage. Dr. Puneet, Dr. Shagun , Gurjinder Kaur, Rajveer Kaur and Dr. Sukhwinder were present during the event.
