World Hypertension Day: Keep check on high BP-Dr Ankur Ahuja

In support of this year World Hypertension Day’s theme ‘Know Your Numbers, with a goal of increasing awareness about high blood pressure’, a free high BP screening camp was held at Ivy Hospital, Mohali . In camp the people were made aware about negative impact of being hypertensive by hospital’s doctors.

Dr Ankur Ahuja, Director Cardiology at Ivy Hospital, Mohali said that high BP is dangerous because it causes strain on the vessels carrying blood around the body. This can cause vessels to become clogged up or to weaken, which can cause damage to the heart or brain. It  also increases the risk of stroke, heart attack, heart failure, and kidney damage and eye problems, he maintained.

Almost 1.8 Billion people are suffering from the hypertension and the 50 percent of the people who are knowing about the causes and situations of the Hypertension do not focus on the hypertension for the high BP problem. It is reported that around 3 of the ten people are suffering from the hypertension, he remarked.

Dr Ahuja said further that it is very easy to remove the stress from the mind by doing activities like yoga and meditations. One has to become more ambitious to remove the stress for living.

Dr Amit Gupta, Consultant Interventional Cardiology, Ivy Hospital Mohali said that hypertension is a disease which can be inherited to the children from parents who are having many types of habits like smoking, drinking excess alcohol, oral contraceptive pills usage, obesity and lack of exercises etc.

It’s a silent killer. Being a lifestyle disorder, it is related to the food we eat, lack of exercise, being overweight and stress, said Dr Gupta.

Simple preventive measures like reduction in salt, sugar and oil intake, increased physical activity, stopping smoking, can help to manage hypertension. For people who still have high BP after lifestyle measures, good, safe and effective medicines are there to control it. It is important to maintain lifelong commitment to BP control, he asserted.
