A rare and complicated spine surgery was performed at Ivy Hospital, Mohali recently.
Giving details, Dr Vineet Saggar head of Head neuro and complex spine surgeries at Ivy Hospital at a press conference said that Faridkot resident 50 years old Reena ( name changed ) had been experiencing neck pain for the past several months.
To relieve her neck pain she went to a massage therapist who manipulated her neck. Soon after the massage session her pain increased and she developed weakness in both arms and legs.
She went to her local doctor who got her CT scan of neck and was diagnosed. She was diagnosed with a rare congenital condition basilar invagination.
Dr. Saggar further informed that in this condition 1st cervical vertebra slips over 2nd cervical vertebrae and 2nd cervical vertebrae starts compressing the sensitive area of brainstem causing weakness in arms and legs.
Little did she know that she had this condition. Neck manipulation is hazardous in such conditions and can not only increase pain but also causes weakness and even sudden death in such conditions, asserted Dr. Saggar.
C1-C2 spine surgeries are one of the most complex spine surgeries and require the highest level of skill and experience, he said.
She was successfully operated on by Dr. Saggar and discharged within 4 days of surgery. She is recovering well and she is able to sit and stand with support.
Meanwhile Dr. Saggar has performed more than 1000 such complex spine procedures in past 13 years at Ivy Hospital Mohali
