65th Foundation Day: Punjabi University eradicated the backwardness of the Malwa region: Dr. Narinder Singh Kapoor

“Punjabi University has spread the fragrance of ‘Punjabiyat’ across the globe. This prestigious institution holds the status of a mother for all of us.” These views were expressed by Dr. Jagdeep Singh, Vice-Chancellor Punjabi University, Patiala, while presiding over a special function organized to mark the university’s 65th Foundation Day.
He said that Punjabi University is not merely a traditional educational institution but a central axis for Punjabi language, art, and culture, which has carved out a unique identity over the last six decades. Reflecting on the university’s journey, he said its crucial role in connecting Punjabis worldwide to their heritage. Sharing details of the past year’s achievements, he urged students and scholars to reach new milestones in research to elevate the university’s international reputation. He emphasized that despite current financial challenges, the institution’s prestige would be maintained through the collective cooperation of staff and students.
The Foundation Day lecture was delivered by Dr. Satbir Singh Gosal, Vice-Chancellor, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana. Highlighting the academic ties between PAU and Punjabi University, Dr. Gosal said the uniqueness of these two universities lies in the fact that they are directly connected to the rural masses.
He discussed the working style and achievements of PAU and expressed hope for forging new academic collaborations with Punjabi University in the future.
Dr. Narinder Singh Kapoor, in an emotional address, said that there was a time when the Malwa region of Punjab was considered backward. He credited Punjabi University with transforming the region. Dr. Kapoor shared his pride in being a student of the university’s second-ever batch. He said that the true task of a university is to generate new ideas, produce social leaders, and pave the way for positive modern changes—a task Punjabi University has performed excellently.

He recalled the early days when the university lacked a campus, and classes were held at Govt. Mohindra College and Thapar College. Dr. Kapoor also cautioned that in the era of globalization, the university faces new challenges. He added that we cannot compare ourselves only to regional neighbors; we are competing with global universities. We must adopt new technical skills and modern educational systems to remain leaders in this global competition.
During the event, special honors were conferred upon Dr. Tarlok Singh Anand, a student of the university’s very first batch, Dr. Malkit Singh Saini,the first PhD student of the Zoology Department and Sukhi Bal, the first Punjabi woman to recently scale Mount Ama Dablam in Nepal.
The welcome address was delivered by Registrar Dr. Davinder Pal Singh Sidhu while the vote of thanks was proposed by Dean, Academic Affairs, Dr. Jaswinder Singh Brar.
