5 Days Workshop on ‘Managing Emotional Regulation for Academic Success’ concludes at Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University

Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University, Fatehgarh Sahib, through a collaborative initiative between the Department of Education and the Office of Dean Students’ Welfare, conducted a five-day workshop on “Managing Emotional Regulation for Academic Success”. Dr. Harneet Billing , convener of the workshop, shared that the workshop was conceptualized with the objective of equipping university students with empirically grounded strategies for emotional regulation, thereby fostering improved academic performance, psychological resilience, and overall well-being.
The inaugural session, facilitated by Dr. Suman Preet Kaur, Assistant Professor in the Department of Education, provided a foundational understanding of the nature of emotions and their influence on academic behaviour. Her session employed reflective activities such as the “Emoji Check-In” to promote emotional awareness among students. On the second day, Dr. Harneet Billing, Head of the Department of Education, addressed emotional challenges commonly encountered in academic settings and guided students through the “Stress Thermometer” exercise, which facilitated identification and management of stress indicators.
Dr. Naveen Kumar, a distinguished psychologist and counsellor from Chandigarh, conducted the third day’s session focused on evidence-based techniques including mindfulness, cognitive reframing, and journaling, all aimed at enhancing self-regulation capacities. The fourth session, led by Dr. Sukhwinder Kaur from the Department of Psychology, Punjabi University, Patiala, centred on cultivating psychological resilience and the development of personalized emotional toolkits. The concluding session was conducted by Dr. Binder Singh, Assistant Professor, Department of Punjabi, who emphasized the importance of integrating emotional regulation practices into students’ everyday academic and personal routines through sustained commitment and self-reflection.
A notable feature of the workshop was the inclusion of daily mindful breathing sessions conducted by Dr. Ramanjit Kaur, which served to create a focused and calm learning environment. The workshop further incorporated interactive exercises designed by Dr. Suman Preet Kaur and Dr. Harneet Billing to reinforce the concepts of emotional literacy and regulation.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. (Dr.) Prit Pal Singh, in his remarks, highlighted the integral role of emotional intelligence in shaping students’ academic trajectories and affirmed the university’s dedication to promoting holistic education. Prof. (Dr.) Sukhwinder Singh Billing Dean Academic Affairs, praised the academic value of the workshop and emphasized the need for such interventions in contemporary higher education. Dr Sikander Singh, Dean Students’ Welfare, reiterated the importance of emotional support mechanisms within campus life and assured continued institutional backing for student-centred mental health initiatives.
