Various districts adopt Alternate Wetting and drying technique

Under the PRANA Project, implemented by Manav Vikas Sansthan (MVS) with the support of The Nature Conservancy (TNC), more than 75,000 acres of paddy fields across the districts of Fatehgarh Sahib, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Malerkotla, Moga, and Patiala in Punjab have successfully adopted Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD), locally known as the “Sukha Sukha Ke Paani Laan Di Vidhi”.

This proven method reduces irrigation water use without affecting crop yields, while also contributing to the reduction of methane emissions from paddy fields. Thousands of farmers are benefiting not only from traditional AWD pipes but also from sensor-based AWD pipes, which help monitor water levels in real time.

To strengthen farmer awareness, MVS has set up Farmer Field Schools (FFS) and demonstration plots to provide hands-on exposure to AWD and other sustainable farming practices. These efforts are playing a vital role in conserving water resources, enhancing crop resilience, and mitigating the impacts of climate change.

District Coordinator Akshay Kumar said, “Through AWD, or the ‘Sukha Sukha Ke Paani Laan Di Vidhi,’ our farmers are not only saving water but also playing a crucial role in protecting the environment. Our aim is to see many more farmers adopt this technology.”
