Eleventh Convocation-IIT Ropar’s 564 young professionals ready to contribute in India’s progress

The Eleventh Annual Convocation of Indian Institute of Technology Ropar (IIT Ropar) was held in the premises of IIT Ropar on Friday, December 30, 2022.

Prof. Rajeev Ahuja, Director, IIT Ropar presented his Annual Report and congratulated the faculty, staff and students. The degrees were offered in the presence of faculty, staff, students, parents and eminent personalities.

The Director thanked the Chief Guest, Rajinder Gupta, Founder & Chairman, Trident Group and Dr. K. Radhakrishnan, Chairman, Board of Governors for their time and presence during the convocation.

Graduates:

This year, 564 students graduated from the various academic programmes of IIT Ropar. This includes:

64 from the Ph.D Programme

02 from the MS Research

138 from the M.Tech

67from the M.Sc.

281 from the  B.Tech

11 from the B.Tech-M.Tech dual degree

Medals & Prizes:

  • The President Gold Medal and the Director Gold Medal for obtaining the highest CGPA among the graduating students of the Bachelor of Technology in the year 2021-22 has been awarded to  Hansin Kishore Ahuja of Computer Science and Engineering department.
  • Institute Silver Medal for obtaining the highest CGPA among the students graduating from the Bachelor of Technology programme in Chemical Engineering department has been awarded to  Yandra Tanushree
  • Institute Silver Medal for obtaining the highest CGPA amongst the students graduating from the Bachelor of Technology programme in Electrical Engineering has been awarded to  Ajey Singh Bhadauria.
  • Institute Silver Medal for obtaining the highest CGPA amongst the students graduating from the Bachelor of Technology programme in Mechanical Engineering has been awarded to  Divyansh Srivastava.
  • Institute Silver Medal for obtaining the highest CGPA amongst the students graduating from the Bachelor of Technology programme in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering has been awarded to  Gaurav Maurya.
  • Institute Silver Medal for obtaining the highest CGPA amongst the students graduating from the Bachelor and Master of Technology programme (B.Tech-M.Tech Dual degree) to  Abhishek Kumar.
  • Institute Silver Medal for obtaining the highest CGPA amongst the students of the Master of Technology programme in Artificial Intelligence in the year 2021-22 to  Ravi Bhatt.
  • Institute Silver Medal for obtaining the highest CGPA amongst the students of the Master of Technology programme in Biomedical Engineering in the year 2021-22 to  Ashritrm
  • Institute Silver Medal for obtaining the highest CGPA amongst the students of the Master of Technology programme in Chemical Engineering in the year 2021-22 to  Faheem Hamid.
  • Institute Silver Medal for obtaining the highest CGPA amongst the students of the Master of Technology programme in Civil Engineering specialization in Water Resources and Environment in the year 2021-22 to  Shubham Bhatia
  • Institute Silver Medal for obtaining the highest CGPA amongst the students of the Master of Technology programme in Computer Science and Engineering in the year 2021-22 to  Anamika.
  • Institute Silver Medal for obtaining the highest CGPA amongst the students of the Master of Technology programme in Mechanical Engineering with specialization in Manufacturing Engineering in the year 2021-22 to  Bombe Dattatraya Dilip
  • Institute Silver Medal for obtaining the highest CGPA amongst the students of the Master of Technology (M.Tech) programme in Electrical Engineering with specialization in Communication and Signal processing  in the year 2021-22 to  Chetan Gupta.
  • Institute Silver Medal for obtaining the highest CGPA amongst the students of the Master of Science (M.Sc) programme in Chemistry in the year 2021-22 to  Lakhwinder Singh
  • Institute Silver Medal for obtaining the highest CGPA amongst the students of the Master of Science (M.Sc) programme in Physics in the year 2021-22 to  Cheeranjiv Pandey.
  • Institute Silver Medal for obtaining the highest CGPA amongst the students of the Master of Science (M.Sc) programme in Mathematics in the year 2021-22 to  Nitin.
  • The Best PhD Thesis Award is awarded to  Neha Thakur (Department of Chemistry) and  Kushagra Goyal (Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering).

Institute Report:

In the annual report, Prof. Rajeev Ahuja, Director, IIT Ropar provided a broad sketch of the Institute’s achievements and accomplishments. He also touched upon all the other salient developments including publications, collaborations & collaborative research, awards, distinguished visitors, student activities, placement etc.

Convocation Address:

Chief Guest  Rajinder Gupta, who delivered the Convocation Address, shared that, “We need knowledgeable leaders like you – educated experts who can help business and industry understand how to transform this information into usable intelligence, and how to move from simply collecting to tactically connecting data to make valuable insights and discoveries. You will be a critical part of the talent pool needed for the developing nation like India, to navigate the Big Data landscape effectively and to provide the analytical skills to harness it fully across many fields pertaining to industries.”

While addressing the graduating students, he said, “Keep up the good work and continue to serve society by creating new knowledge, by disseminating existing knowledge, by investigating and asking questions, not accepting statoscope, but constantly questioning how things can be done better, quicker, more efficiently, with lower waste, with less cost, and reaching a larger section of the society that we serve, both in India and also globally.”

Dr. K. Radhakrishnan, Chairman, Board of GovernorsIIT Ropar shared his words during the convocation, stating that academic excellence is the bedrock of IIT Ropar. He praised the research ecosystem at the campus, as exemplified by the research outcomes and publications.

Major Achievements of the Institute in the year 2021:

  • IIT Ropar student population has grown to 2620 students, including 1431 UG, 436 PG, 2 MS(R) and 739 PhD, 12 B.Tech- M.Tech Dual Degree students. During the last seven years from 2015-16 to 2022-23, the student’s intake has increased more than 5 times– from 124 to 395 for B.Tech., 43 to 287 for M.Sc. and M.Tech. and 53 to 160 for PhD programmes.
  • There is a nearly 6 times increase in the number of female students admitted to IIT Ropar from 87 in 2015-16 to 874 in 2022-23.
  • IIT Ropar has been ranked number 2in India according to The Times Higher Education Young University Rankings 2022. The institute has secured the global rank of 81 with overall score of 48.8.
  • We have been ranked 68th in Asia University Rankings among top 100 Institutions in Asia.
  • IIT Ropar has been ranked 22ndand stood among the top 25 in all Engineering institutes, and ranked 35th in the overall category as per the India Rankings 2022 conducted by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF).
  • IIT Ropar stood among the top 100 with 86th rank in Times Higher Education Emerging Economies University Rankings 2022.
  • IIT Ropar once again made a mark by being ranked between the bracket of 351-400 in the World in THE World University Rankings 2022.
  • IIT Ropar has been ranked at thetop position  in Graduate Quality Index as measured by Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis in their working paper on “The Global Distribution of college graduate quality” in which the 3300 colleges in 66 countries were evaluated.”
  • Heartening response from the industry was seen for the campus recruitment process that resulted in the placement of 88.49% of undergraduate students  with an average package of Rs. 20.24 LPA.
  • IIT Ropar’s research quality and impact can be ascertained from the average citation per paper, which stands at 17.75 with an H-Index of 84. This is the second highest among all the young generation IITs as per recent Scopus data.
  • Till date, the Institute has received 362 projects so far with an outlay of Rs. 263.15 crore.
  • IIT Ropar experienced a surge in consultancy projects which has gone up to Rs. 24.41 crore with 371 projects.

  • NOTEWORTHY COLLABORATIONS THROUGH MOUs

With the defence sector:   IIT Ropar collaborated with UK India Business Council, Army Training Command (ARTRAC), Bharat Dynamics Ltd. and with The Irish Institute of Digital Business (dotLAB) Dublin City to enable technologies and transform processes in the area of Aerospace, Defence sector and to encourage direct contact, cooperation, and exchanges between their faculty and administrative staff, departments, and research institution.

With International Institutions: IIT Ropar collaborated with Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia, University of Saskatchewan, Canada, South Dakota State University to foster academic exchange and cooperation between the institutions and to foster joint academic programme in the field of education and research.

With Indian Organizations and Institutions: IIT Ropar collaborated with Punjab Remote Sensing Center, SBL Speciality Coatings Private Limited  and with PGIMER, Chandigarh, DMCH, Ludhiana to promote academic cooperation in   faculty exchange, student exchange, joint research projects, exchange of scientific and teaching materials and joint conferences/workshops/lectures.

With specific focus on ASEAN & SAARC nation collaboration: IIT Ropar has entered into MoU with Sebelas Maret University Indonesia and Taipei Economic and Cultural Centre.
