World Diabetes Day is observed every year on 14th November to raise global awareness about diabetes, its growing impact on health, and ways to prevent and manage it effectively. The theme for this year is “Wellness”, emphasizing the importance of a healthy lifestyle and holistic well-being for preventing diabetes and improving the quality of life of those living with it.

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes (Mellitus) is a metabolic disorder in which the body either does not produce enough insulin or cannot effectively use the insulin it produces, resulting in high blood sugar levels. Uncontrolled diabetes can lead to serious complications such as heart disease, kidney failure, blindness, nerve damage, stroke, and foot ulcers, but timely prevention and management can significantly reduce risks.

Major Causes and Risk Factors

Sedentary lifestyle and lack of physical activity

Unhealthy diet high in sugar, refined carbohydrates, and fats

Obesity and overweight

Family history / genetic factors

Stress and inadequate sleep

Smoking and alcohol consumption

Age above 40 years (risk increases but now rising in younger adults too)

Prevention of Diabetes – Wellness Approach

Regular exercise – at least 30 minutes daily (walking, cycling, yoga, etc.)

Maintain a healthy body weight

Avoid smoking, tobacco and limit alcohol intake

Regular screening of blood sugar, especially for high-risk individuals
