150th Birth Anniversary of Unsung Hero Birsa Munda (Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas)-Puri

Birsa Munda (1875-1900) was a tribal leader and freedom fighter who led the Munda rebellion against the British rule. In reverence of his legacy, November 15 is celebrated as Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas across India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated on November 15, 2024, the 150th birth anniversary celebrations of Birsa Munda by releasing a coin and postal stamp to grace the historic occasion of unsung hero.
To commemorate him, various events will continue till November 15, 2025 to focus India’s tribal heritage and freedom movement. The government has enhanced tribal education by opening various education opportunities. Dharti Aaba the PM Janjatiya Unnat Gram Abhiyan is to implement existing schemes across Scheduled Tribe villages where Dharti Aaba refers to Birsa Munda. To celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of tribal freedom fighter Birsa Munda, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Dadiapada in Gujrat on November 15 to honour Birsa Munda’s birth anniversary.
It is also a matter of pride that Droupdi Murmu is the first person from tribal community to occupy the post of the President of independent India. She is all praise for Birsa Munda who was ‘an unsung hero’ for a long time but their government in 2021 “decided to celebrate Birsa Munda’s birth anniversary as ‘Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas’ to remember the contributions of the tribal freedom fighters.”


Born on November 15, 1875 in the village of Ulgulan in Jharkhand, Birsa was a member of the Munda tribe who fought for the rights of his people, organised the Mundas and other tribal groups against the British and their policies. He advocated for the restoration of tribal rights and his movement called Ulgulan¸ (the massive tumult) gained force.
Consequently, he was arrested along with his followers on March 09, 1900, was tried and sentenced to death. Birsa Munda’s rebellion was an uprising against the British rule in India. He was a true hero of India’s freedom struggle and his sacrifice will be remembered for the coming generations. The President of India has recently inaugurated “Janjatiya Darpan”, a gallery in the Rashtrapati Bhavan Museum to provide a glimpse of tribal communities.
