Farmers’ burn copies of seed bill, Electricity bill 2025

On the call of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) , activists and supporters of the All India Kisan Khet Mazdoor Sangathan, Kisan Mazdoor Utthan Morcha, Kisan Sabha, and Save Environment Committee protested in many places of Punjab and Haryana  today, demanding the withdrawal of the Seed Bill 2025 and the Electricity Amendment Bill 2025 by  burning copies of both bills.

Speakers on the occasion stated that the central government recently introduced a draft of the Seed Bill 2025 and circulated draft Electricity Amendment Bill 2025 . Both these bills are against the interests of farmers and in the favor of domestic and foreign multinational companies. With electricity and seeds in private hands, their prices will rise arbitrarily, further increasing the cost of farming and electricity expenses. They stated that once the Electricity Amendment Bill 2025 becomes law, power generation and distribution will also be transferred to private companies, leading to a rise in electricity prices.

The Central Government has introduced the Electricity Bill 2025, which proposes to eliminate government control over electricity generation, transmission, and distribution, handing it over to private companies. The Bill states that electricity supply will now be done on the principle of guaranteeing profits for the supply companies.

The government that is not fixing minimum profitable crop prices for farmers, and not guaranteeing a living minimum wage for workers, is bringing a law to increase corporate profits by forcibly collecting expensive electricity charges from the poor working masses.

This will make electricity consumption extremely expensive for farmers, labourers, traders, domestic consumers, the middle class, and small producers. Electricity bills will be forcibly recovered from people, and by implementing Smart Meters, a system will be established where power is cut off automatically once the prepaid amount is exhausted. The Smart Meter system also includes a provision for charging rates higher than normal during Peak Hours.

The power supply  rate  is based not  on the cost of generating one unit of electricity, but rather on all the expenses incurred to bring the electricity to your home. Now, private companies will recover this entire cost from the common people. The Electricity Bill 2025 will also lead to widespread retrenchment of regular workers in the power department.

The farmers demanded  withdrawing Bill 2025, stopping the installation of Smart Meters, providing free electricity for agricultural tubewells.
