AIIMS Bathinda empowers healthcare community through sensitization program on Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act (RPwD) 2016

Under the guidance of the Executive Director, Prof. (Dr.) Ratan Gupta, AIIMS Bathinda organized “Sensitization Program on Rights of Persons with Disability (RPwD) Act 2016 for Healthcare professionals” on 29 December 2025.
The main objectives of the program were to create awareness about RPwD Act 2016 and sensitize faculty, staff & students about different types of disabilities. The program aimed to review implementation of RPwD Act and discuss challenges faced by PwDs.
In the inauguration session, the Executive Director stressed upon the importance of creating awareness for the rights of the differently abled through such sessions. The Dean Academics, highlighted the importance of integrating disability awareness into medical education and training. Medical Superintendent highlighted the crucial role of hospital administration in implementing the RPwD Act, discussing strategies for ensuring accessibility, infrastructure modifications, and disability-friendly services in institute.
The introductory session featured talks by faculty from departments of Community & Family Medicine, and Hospital Administration, discussing the statistics of PwD living in India, the RPwD Act, its provisions, and the administrative aspects of implementing RPwD Act in healthcare institutions.

This was followed by talks by various faculty members from the medical specialities dealing with different kinds of disabilities. The themes covered included – visual impairments and the role of ophthalmologists in disability certification, neuro-developmental disabilities in children and early intervention strategies, hearing impairments and the importance of early detection and intervention and community-based approaches to disability prevention and rehabilitation.
The program provided a platform for healthcare professionals to understand the RPwD Act 2016 and discuss ways to improve accessibility and care for persons with disabilities.
