IITian Varjeet Walia appointed 54th Deputy Commissioner of Patiala

Varjeet Walia today appointed as 54th Deputy Commissioner of Patiala.

A 2018 Batch IAS officer Varjeet Walia is son of a Punjabi Jagran editor Varinder Walia. His wife is IRS officer and is joint commissioner Customs (GST) department.

He had done B.Tech in chemical engineering from the IIT Delhi and has served on various positions, including the deputy commissioner Rupnagar, Additional Principal Secretary of the Chief Minister amongst others.

He secured 21st position in all India civil services exams (CSE) in his fourth attempt. Before that he secured a rank of 577 in UPSC CSE in his second attempt. Varjeet got into Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS), but he believed that he could do better in UPSC and cleared the UPSC CSE again with 21st rank

Varjeet Walia is the first member in the family to clear UPSC. He did his schooling from Amritsar. He celebrates his birthday every year on December 20th.

He is replacing Dr. Preeti Yadav who was appointed Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Patiala in September 2024.

Incidentally, Preeti Yadav was also deputy commissioner Ropar when she was transferred to Patiala and now Vaejeet Walia is also coming from Ropar.
