Fish and Fishery Workshop for Enterprise Development organized by Punjabi University Zoology department

Department of Zoology and Environmental Sciences, Punjabi University, Patiala has organized a five days workshop on the topic “Professional Training Program in Fish and Fisheries for Enterprise Development” in collaboration with Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Career Hub (EICH) from 29th January to 2nd February, 2026.

50 participants from different universities attended this workshop. Dr. Onkar Singh Brraich, Head and Convener of the workshop introduced the topic and said that this workshop will equip with the practical skills, scientific knowledge and professional exposure.

The students had learnt about various areas like AQUACULTURE AND FARMING, PROCESSING AND VALUE ADDITION, FISH SPECIES SELECTION AND HATCHERY MANAGEMENT, WATER QUALITY AND ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT and BUSINESS AND SUPPORT SERVICES. Vice Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Jagdeep Singh was Chief Guest on the occasion, in his inaugural address; he said that fish and fisheries occupy a unique and vital position in our economy.

For centuries, fisheries have sustained communities by providing nutritious food, employment, and economic stability. Fishery sector has emerged as a powerful engine of entrepreneurial growth.

He applauded the efforts made by the department. Prof. Himender Bharti, Director, EICH, Punjabi University, Patiala said in his special remarks that entrepreneurship in fisheries is not only about economic gain; it is also about employment generation and social inclusion.

The sector has the capacity to empower rural communities, women and youth. Karamjit Singh, Director and Warden Fisheries, Govt. of Punjab was Guest of Honour, he highlighted the various schemes and subsidies provided by the department to start entrepreneurship in fishery sector.

Dr. Vineet Inder Kaur, Principal Scientist, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana, she explained in her key note address that advancements in aquaculture systems have opened new doors for innovation.

Areas such as ornamental fish culture, biofloc systems, recirculatory aquaculture systems, value-added fish products, fish feed production, and digital marketplaces are redefining fisheries entrepreneurship. Participants were taken to nearby fish farms to get first hand information. Valedictory function was organised on 02-02-2026.

Prof. (Dr.) Jaswinder Singh Brar, the Chief Guest, delivers the valedictory address, urging students to build entrepreneurial skills and become job creators rather than job seekers. Participants also shared their views. Dr. Madhu Bala proposed vote of thanks.
