The Department of Education at Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University, Fatehgarh Sahib, successfully organised a five-day workshop titled “Student Counselling for Academic & Personal Development” at Mata Gujri Government Senior Secondary School of Eminence. Conducted by postgraduate students as part of their internship programme, the workshop aimed to bridge theoretical knowledge of guidance and counselling with real-life school experiences.
Dr. Harneet Billing, Head of the Department and Workshop Coordinator, stated that the programme focused on addressing students’ academic, emotional, and career-related challenges while simultaneously developing the professional skills of future teachers. Spread across ten sessions, the workshop covered key topics including self-awareness, learning styles, academic skills, career guidance, self-confidence building, goal setting, and SWOT analysis for personal evaluation and future planning. The workshop employed highly interactive methods such as group discussions, experiential activities, reflective exercises, quizzes, and planning exercises to ensure active student participation and effective learning. The initiative also gave postgraduate students valuable hands-on exposure to counselling techniques, communication skills, and learner-centred teaching practices.

Appreciating the effort, Vice-Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Prit Pal Singh highlighted the crucial role of experiential learning in teacher education. He emphasised that quality educators need not only subject knowledge but also emotional intelligence, effective counselling skills, and the ability to understand the diverse needs of students.
