2313 Degrees awarded during 34th Convocation of Thapar Institute

The 34th Convocation of Thapar Institute of Engineering & Technology (TIET) was concluded .  The degrees were distributed in a phased manner from 18-Jan-2021 to 22-Jan-2021 keeping in view the prevailing circumstances.

At the convocation, 2313 degrees were awarded to graduating students including 118 Ph.D. Degrees, 571 Master’s in Engineering, Sciences, Humanities & and Management and 1624 Bachelor’s degrees in Engineering.

Medal winners Alisha Malhotra received the President’s Medal for the highest CGPA; Astha Nigam wins the S. Ranbir Singh Memorial Medal for Best All-Round performance. Arushi Mishra was awarded Prof. V. Rajaraman Computer Science Engineering Award, and Ranjana was awarded S. Ram S. Sidhu Memorial Medal.

Professor Prakash Gopalan, Director, TIET congratulated all the degree recipients and presented the Institute’s annual report. He also shared that the success of the university lies mainly on cutting-edge research, enviable infrastructure and smart institute-industry linkages. Thapar Institute students have 1172 and 1255 publications in SCI/Scopus Journals in 2019 and 2020 respectively, and over 121 sponsored research projects are in progress. Citations too have grown with over 18418 citations in 2020. The average is 12.06 citations per article in web of science. He spoke about institute’s national and global rankings and recognition. Professor Gopalan said “TIET is ranked number one amongst private institutes in India by Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2021”. It is ranked 29th by National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF-2020); joint 32nd within India by QS Asia University Ranking and 601-800 worldwide and jointly 3rd within India by the prestigious Times Higher Education World University Rankings, 2021.

The computer science branch of the institute is ranked 1st amongst private Institutes in India and Joint 2nd in India by Times Higher Education World University Rankings, 2021. In this pandemic time, Thapar institute has started online classes through Thapar Learning Management System (TIET-LMS). TIET LMS allows faculty to manage all course activities online. During Covid-19, TIET team has developed 6 products during April to July 2020 in Experiential Learning Center and Central Workshop with financial support from the institute. The products are Ventilators: Mechanical Type & Electronics Based; ROBO-CART: Automated Cart / trolleys; Face Shield. Further Professor Gopalan said that “TIET is continually investing and building or upgrading its research and infrastructure”. He added that three large centers of excellence have commenced: Food Security Science and Technology Centre of Excellence (joint initiative of Thapar Institute and Tel Aviv University, Isreal); TIET-VT Center of Excellence for Emerging Materials (a collaboration of Thapar Institute & Virginia Tech, USA) and Centre of Excellence for Advanced Manufacturing (a joint initiative of Thapar Institute and Tel Aviv University, Israel)”. TIET has entered into strategic partnerships with the Netherlands-based IT consulting firm- Xebia and Future first- part of Mauritius-based Hertshten group (holding company).

TIET is proud to share the impact of one of its kind unique Global Alumni- Student mentorship program, between the alumni and its students on campus. After a successful Pilot in 2019 under a partnership with Mr. Rajnish Maini (Alumnus of TI) today we have 1000 alumni participating in the program guiding the students on personal growth, career development, and specific areas that the students wish to drive. The program is for a duration of three months, one hour each week where the mentor and the mentee are devoting time and resources towards the agenda created by and for the mentee.
